Did you get lost because you weren't familiar with all these strange words? Were there any things you didn't understand? Here's a list of all those things you may have not understood:

Vocabulary

This is a list of some words that you might not understand, as they are Japanese. Hope it is useful to you!

Manga: It's what we call comics, but this word is used to refer to the Japanese ones. It can also be used to talk about the drawings made using the Japanese style.

Anime: It is the "cartoon" made in Japan. Normally the anime is based in a manga that has been published or that is being published in Japan. Occasionally, the mangas are adapted in order to become animated, and sometimes the differences can be very big.

Shoujo: It means "girl". When we talk about shoujo manga, we mean manga designed specially for girls, and it was published in a magazine for girls.

Shounen: It means "boy". When we talk about shounen manga, we mean manga designed specially for boys, and it was published in a magazine for boys.

ISBN: It is a reference number. If you want to buy a manga, and the shop doesn't have it, you can give the ISBN of the manga you want to buy and it will be easier for them to find the manga you requested.

Sensei: It is the word used for master or mistress (the Japanese normally add suffixes to the names of the person, like "chan" "san" "kun", etc. depending on the relationship they have with the person.)

Mangaka: Person whose job is to draw manga.

Furoku: Little gifts given in the Ribon Magazine.

Other stuff

If you didn't know, Japanese people read from right to left, while the Europeans and Americans read from left to right.

The Japanese school year starts in May and it finishes in March. I've finally asked about how the Japanse group the students, and I've been told that in the same class there are people born in different years. It looks like the Japanese group people born between April and March of the next year. An example would be Yuu and Miki. (Yuu was born in June, and Miki in March. Yoshizumi-sensei says, in one of the last Free Talks that Yuu is older than Miki. So the only way that this could happen is if Yuu was born the year before Miki.)
